Hollywood Glam, otherwise known as Hollywood Regency Design, appeared in LA in the 1930’s with designers to the stars such as Haines, Draper and Baldwinn. More recently the design style was preferred by celebrities like Joan Crawford, Liza Minnelli and former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
The design style came about as Hollywood homes became destinations for the rich and famous to show off their conspicuous consumption. It was about cocktail hour, dinner parties and being seen.
Hollywood Regency Design is a mix of elements including art deco, neo-classic and modern. While Hollywood Glam is a throwback to another era, it is still incredibly modern. It is cosmopolitan and smart. It is drama, drama, drama.
Anyone can channel old Hollywood glam into their design by adding textures such as silk, velvet or shag and using bold patterns and large artwork and sculptures. Seating should be small scale and plush. Include metallic accents like gold and stainless steel. Wood pieces should be glossy and lacquered. Small details like fringe on lampshades or chandeliers with crystals bring lots of glam. Don’t forget mirrors, mirrors and more mirrors (on furniture legs, tabletops and hanging on the walls)! Old Hollywood celebs LOVED their own reflection.
